Features of Stachys ‘Hummelo’ –  Perennial Plant for 2019

Description – this plant forms large, rounded clumps of green, long and narrow, textured leaves.  It’s lovely even when it’s not in bloom.  From early thru mid-summer the upright spikes of bright-purple flowers appear which attract bees to the nectar.  The flowers make quite a display of color.

Needs – Stachys ‘Hummelo’ require full sun to part shade.  They like well drained soil; water as necessary.

Uses – This colorful and compact winner makes an excellent addition to the full sun perennial border.  Looks terrific in combination with ornamental grasses.

Maintenance – Removing faded flowers will encourage more buds to form for weeks on end.  Spreads slowly by creeping rhizomes.  May benefit from division every few years.  The strong stems and seed heads contribute to winter interest.  They are deer resistant.

Unique Qualities – Pollinators can’t resist the striking midsummer spikes of magenta flowers rising above bright green, trouble-free foliage.  ‘Hummelo’ was the highest rated Stachys in the Chicago Botanic Garden Evaluation Trials for its strong flower production, vigor, habit, quality and winter hardiness.

Though this plant is relatively unknown to many gardeners, it makes a great addition to any sunny border.  What’s not to love about this easy to grow about this plant that will go with almost everything else in the garden.
