Side Yard Landscaping and Pathways

Side Yard Landscaping and Pathways

A path integrates the front yard and backyard

Side yards are often overlooked by homeowners.  It’s one of the most underutilized areas in home properties.  What you usually see are fences or evergreen screens to create privacy and mark your property line or they become a place for storing excess garden supplies, compost bins or recycling containers.  However, adding a few landscaping features, your side yard could become a newly discovered and used part of your yard.

Don’t let the challenge of the narrowness and exposure of your yard stop you from imagining your yard’s potential.  Our designers at Whitehouse Landscaping can offer landscape solutions and design expertise for your side yard.

Walkway or Path – Decide if you would like a functional walkway that serves as the shortest distance between the front and back yards or perhaps a meandering stepping-stone path that gets you to enjoy some plantings or focal point along the way.  Stepping stones are a great solution for handling foot traffic through a lawn area and are inexpensive.

Plantings – Follow the line of the path by planning beds, possibly built into berms that include colorful blooms or a variety of plant shapes and textures.  If you space is narrow, look for trees, shrubs and perennials that have a columnar shape without growing two wide.  There are lots of smaller shrubs to choose from that give you a big bang for your buck.

Sitting Area – Back up against some tall plantings or wall and it will become an additional inviting seating area.

Utilitarian Space – Maybe you need a dog run or a potting shed.

Vertical Gardening – A fence lining the walkway gives vines a place to climb

Water Feature – Add a water feature or garden sculpture for a focal point.
