Last summer was the hottest on record—and this year could bring more of the same. Keeping your plants hydrated is essential to maintaining a healthy, vibrant landscape through the summer heat.   We have highlighted 6 smart watering tips to help you water your plants, lawn, trees and shrubs:

 Beat the Heat: Watering Smarter

  1.  Water Early or Late

Water in the early morning or evening when the sun is low. This reduces evaporation and helps water soak into the soil rather than evaporating quickly.

  2.  Water Deeply, Not Frequently

Less frequent but deeper soakings encourage plants to develop strong, deep root systems that can better withstand dry conditions. Most lawns and gardens benefits from having about an inch of water per week.

  3.  Use Drip or Soaker Hoses

Drip irrigation and soaker hoses deliver water slowly and directly to the root zone, minimizing waste and keeping foliage dry (which helps prevent disease). They’re especially effective in planting beds and around shrubs and trees.

  4.  Mulch for Moisture Retention

A 2–3 inch layer of mulch helps the soil retain moisture, keeps roots cooler, and reduces weed competition. It’s an easy way to boost water efficiency across your landscape.

  5.  Monitor Rainfall with a Gauge

Don’t rely on guesswork—use a simple rain gauge to track how much water your plants are actually getting. It’s easy to over- or underestimate rainfall, especially during scattered summer storms.

  6. Watch for Signs of Stress

Look for wilting, browning, or dry soil as indicators your plants may need more water. Every landscape is different, so keep an eye on how your plants respond to the weather.
