Meet the Brothers Behind Your Lawn Care
If you’ve ever wondered who’s behind the scenes caring for your lawn, you’re about to meet them. At Whitehouse Landscaping, our Turf Care Program is led by Cole Novak (on the right), our PA Certified Turfgrass Technician, with support occasionally from his younger brother Jackson who assists with aeration, and in addition jumps in wherever needed across the company. Together, they bring a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and a level of consistency our clients truly benefit from, especially helping our clients achieve a healthier, green lawn. And with spring underway, now is the perfect time to get your lawn on the right track.
Why They Love the Work
For both Cole and Jackson, working outdoors isn’t just a job—it’s a big part of why they enjoy what they do.
They both appreciate being outside in the fresh air, especially on sunny days, rather than being inside on a typical 9–5 schedule. It’s a simple answer, but an honest one—and it shows in the energy they bring to their work.
Life Outside of Work
When they’re not taking care of lawns, these two are all about hockey.
They’ve been playing since they were young and still make time for it today—whether it’s ice hockey or roller hockey (in fact, they had a late game the night of this interview). That competitive edge definitely carries over into their work ethic.
Cole also enjoys video games in his downtime, while Jackson is a golfer—so naturally, he’s a fan of a certain backyard putting green at Ted Whitehouse’s home.
What Keeps Them Going
Long days in the field require some fuel—but not the kind you might expect.
No coffee here. Jackson keeps it simple with Kirkland Sparkling Water, while Cole goes with a classic Dr. Pepper.
Listening Preferences at Work
Expecting to hear about music preferences, they both chimed in that podcasts were their their listening choices. Whether it be about hockey, golf and yes, even a turf podcast, all subjects make for an interesting multi-task friendly medium.

The Satisfaction of a Job Well Done
When asked what they enjoy most about their work, Cole didn’t hesitate.
There’s something satisfying about the visible pattern left behind after a lawn treatment—the circular tire lines that tighten as the application is completed. It’s a small detail, but one that reflects precision and care.
More importantly, it’s seeing the improvement in a lawn over time that makes the job rewarding.
A Little Turf Insight for Homeowners
Cole also shared something many homeowners may not realize.
During hot, dry stretches, lawns can turn brown, especially when not watered. While it may look concerning, the good news is that in many cases, the roots are still healthy. With proper care and watering, the lawn can recover and green back up.
A Competitive Edge (In a Good Way)
When asked who’s more competitive, they both laughed and agreed—it’s a tie.
But what stood out was their perspective: competition between them doesn’t create friction—it pushes them both to improve. And that mindset shows up in the quality of their work.
The “Perfect Backyard”?
Even without owning homes (yet), they had answers ready.
Cole would keep it simple with a flat, open yard without fencing.
Jackson? He’s already got his eye on a backyard with a putting green.
