6 Backyard Makeover Ideas to Inspire You

Chambers

As landscapers, we tackle lots of backyard makeovers in Montgomery, Chester and Berks counties.   There are homeowners who inherit a ‘blah’ backyard, some folks lives are busy and outdoors get neglected, and others just want to transform their yard so that everyone wants to hang out in their outdoor space.

Whatever the reason, we’ve worked on big and small projects, and with a little creativity and labor, we have created welcoming outdoor spaces and transformed more of their property into usable space.  Below are a few backyard makeover features that liven up any outdoor space.

Think Plants!

When it comes to making your yard beautiful, start with some colorful trees, shrubs and flowers.  Nothing more can turn a drab yard into a colorful and comfortable place to be.     Consider choosing a small ornamental tree for big impact or learn tips on how to select and properly plant a tree.   Remember to plan for the mature size of the tree and shrub.   Think about incorporating shrubs with varying textures, colors, and bloom times.  Deciduous shrubs planted in front of evergreens will change the look seasonally. Do you have a need to screen for privacy or an ugly view?  If you’re apprehensive about what to plant, work with a professional who can recommend the right plant for the right place

Lay out a New Flower Bed

Lay out a new flower bed with a hose or rope with gentle curves that look more natural.   Dig out the garden and add topsoil.  Don’t forget to edge your new beds. A section of mass planting one particular flower creates maximum impact.  If you feel lost on how to proceed, read 8 tips for designing and planting a new flower bed.

Plan for Pathways through the Landscape

Your home inside has different spaces, and the best backyards also have different ‘outdoor rooms’.  How does one get to your side yard or the patio?  There are lots of different materials for creating a pathway.  Mulch, gravel, stepping stones, pavers will all add charm to your total landscaped look.  Paths complement the garden and harmonize everything within your yard.

A small project might be a little path through a garden with stepping stones.

Landscape Lighting

Outdoor lighting can transform your outdoor space.   Uplighting for trees and shrubs in the backyard is a nice way to add lights to the yard.  Spotlights can be used to highlight a special tree or wall or basically light up any part of your yard or patio that you want to feature or illuminate.  The obvious benefit is that lighting can illuminate steps and paths for the safety of everyone.

The right lighting can add the perfect ambiance to your backyard plus extend the time you’re outdoors.  In addition, it makes your yard safer and easier to navigate.

Extend Patio Space

Add a Firepit

Informal fire pit area with boulders surrounding it.

Don’t underestimate the value of adding fire to your backyard living  You can’t beat the feeling that comes from sitting around the fire, whether it’s just with your immediate family or a party with s’mores and campfire tales.  Adding additional sources of heat to your yard will invite your family and friends to linger, even when it gets cold out.

Decide between a wood-burning or gas/propane fire source and determine what size, depth and appearance you’re comfortable with.
