The Challenge

The homeowners had an old narrow ‘builder concrete installed walkway’, which was discolored, chipping away and uninviting.  It was heavy on function (point A to point B), but lacked in aesthetic appeal.  They wanted to create an inviting walkway that was both functional and make walking to the front door a pleasant, spatial experience.  Their current landscaping was tired and overgrown and needed to be refreshed.  The new walkway would basically complement their lovely Phoenixville home and create some ambiance to the front of the home.

Existing and overgrown shrubs at this Phoenixville home were ripped out.

Project Planning

The purpose of a front walkway is to effectively draw a guest to your front door.  Creating a visual flow in a front yard is important and the walkway is a big part of this.

Curved paths are inviting, so Whitehouse Landscaping designed a meandering path that completely changed the walk to the front door.    A wider width was proposed which would accommodate at least two guests walking side by side and allow a wider gathering area where people can congregate near the front door.

Pavers lend an air of warmth and increate curb appeal.  The interior pavers used were Techo Bloc Blu 60 (Shale Grey) with contrasting Hera pavers (Onyx Black).   The front stoop was overlayed with Techo Bloc Blu 45 pavers and Venetian caps and risers (all Shale Grey) with a 5’ Techo Bloc Rocka Step (Riviera).

All the existing, overgrown foundation shrubs were ripped out to accommodate new landscaping.  A well-designed landscape with the right plants and proper scale softens the walkway’s appearance and makes the entry into your home more inviting.   The curved areas allowed for deeper planting space and the only specimen we left untouched was the beautiful Japanese Maple remained by the front door.

Phoenixville renovated paver walkway and landscaping.

Result

Recalling the old adage, “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey”.  Well, this new curved walkway design and landscaping handsomely reflect the overall curb appeal of our client’s home and makes a world of difference in how guests view their walk to the front door.   An additional side benefit to removing the overgrown landscaping by the front door is that the homeowner could now seasonally decorate the front stoop where as before, any decoration would be hidden.

Our client was thrilled with the results and this is what they had to say:

Whitehouse Landscaping does an absolutely beautiful job! We love our new front walkway and landscaping. The individuals working at our home were very courteous, kind, and were so great with our kids–they even stayed late one day until my girls and I got home from picking up their big brother from school so that he could ride on the digger! We highly recommend this company!            Katharine P.

Front entrances reflect a family’s style.  We had another client in Phoenixville who was looking for a more contemporary front entrance and you can see from the photos, we achieved the curb appeal that they were looking for.

Curb appeal improved dramatically and front stoop now visible for seasonal decorating.
